Find the elements that jump during loading and interaction, then reserve space for images, ads, fonts, and dynamic content.
Reproduce the movement first
Load a page at the same viewport where visitors report a jump. Watch for headings, cards, buttons, and banners moving as images or fonts arrive. Chrome DevTools Performance can highlight layout-shift events. Check both initial load and later interactions: field CLS can include movement long after a lab tool finishes its first screenshot. Record which element moved and what loaded immediately before it.
Give media predictable dimensions
Add width and height or a stable aspect ratio to images and video containers so the browser can reserve space before download. This is especially important for a hero image above the fold. A placeholder should match the final layout rather than being removed and replaced with a different-sized block. Responsive CSS can still scale the image; the key is preserving its aspect ratio.
