Check sitemap XML for malformed markup, duplicate URLs, invalid dates, noncanonical pages, redirects, and other problems before submission.
A valid file is only the first requirement
A sitemap can be well-formed XML and still be poor search guidance. Validation begins with syntax—correct namespaces, escaped characters, and supported elements—then moves to the URLs themselves. Each listed URL should normally be canonical, indexable, accessible without a login, and useful enough to belong in search.
Submitting a sitemap does not force indexing. It gives search engines a discovery signal and lets their tools report processing issues. The sitemap should agree with internal links, canonical tags, robots directives, redirects, and actual HTTP responses.
