A useful bug report reduces the distance between seeing a problem and understanding it. A dramatic title cannot replace a reproducible example.
Describe the starting point
Include the page, relevant account state, browser, and any settings needed to trigger the issue. Use sample data rather than customer records. If the problem depends on a long title or an empty field, include that detail.
Separate observation from explanation
List the smallest sequence of steps, the expected result, and the actual result. Put suspected causes in a separate note. This keeps a plausible theory from being mistaken for evidence.
Confirm the fix
Retest the original steps after a change and try one nearby case. For a broken empty state, also check one result and several results. Close the report with the tested conditions so the next reader knows what was actually verified.
Capture the smallest reproduction
Start from a clean page or test account and list each action in order. Include the exact input that triggers the issue and the result you expected. If the problem happens only after a sequence, preserve that sequence; “the page is broken” does not tell another person where to begin.
Describe the environment
Record the page URL, date and time, browser and device, account role, and relevant app or theme version when known. Remove passwords, private customer data, and tokens from screenshots and logs. A redacted example should preserve the behavior without exposing someone else’s information.
Attach evidence that answers a question
Use one screenshot or short recording to show the visible result, and add a console or network error only when it helps locate the failure. Label each attachment with what it demonstrates. Finish with a simple pass condition so the reporter and developer can agree when the issue is fixed.
An example to adapt
Instead of “the menu fails,” report: open the page at a stated width, focus the WordPress menu button, press Enter, then press Tab. State which link should receive focus and what happened instead. Replace this illustrative sequence with the actions that reproduce your actual issue.
Put it into practice
Choose one step from this article, try it on a representative project, and record what you learn before changing the wider workflow.
This is general editorial guidance rather than a hands-on product test; verify platform-specific details in current primary documentation.
