How franchise T20 leagues like the NPL are built: team ownership, player signings, overseas players and how fans benefit.
Read the storyNepal played at the ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh in 2014, its first appearance at a global T20 event. In 2018 the team earned One Day International (ODI) status, giving it a place in the international calendar. In 2024 Nepal returned to the T20 World Cup and lost a close match to South Africa by a single run, a result that won the team many new admirers.
Success in international events created demand for regular, high-quality cricket at home. A franchise competition gives domestic players more matches against stronger opposition, gives fans a reason to attend and gives sponsors and broadcasters a product to invest in.
Over the years a handful of Nepali cricketers have become household names, and many young players cite them as the reason they picked up a bat or a ball. Cricket in Nepal grew through community tournaments, school matches and street games. The sport's growth shows how much talent exists outside the major cities. The need now is for pathways that allow young cricketers from every region to be noticed, coached and given opportunities to play at a higher level.
Nepal's cricket authorities continue to work on governance, coaching, facilities and funding. Associate nations can find it hard to schedule matches against top teams, so a domestic league that regularly tests players is valuable. Keeping the sport transparent and well managed is key to its future.
