Design a Media Import That Can Be Retried After Partial Failure

Example: seven images save before the eighth fails

A retry should reuse or update the seven known media records instead of creating seven more copies. The failed item should retain enough diagnostic context to investigate its format or storage path. Articles depending on unavailable media should not silently receive unrelated attachments.

Test the recovery path deliberately

Run a small batch twice, interrupt a test import and resume it. Verify record counts, relationships and public image URLs after restart. Keep errors specific enough to identify the failed item without exposing credentials or private filesystem details to ordinary visitors.

Idempotency is an application behavior that must be designed and tested. It is not achieved by labeling a retry button “safe” while every attempt creates new records.
