How franchise T20 leagues like the NPL are built: team ownership, player signings, overseas players and how fans benefit.
Read the storyIf scores finish level in a knockout match, a super over decides the winner: each team faces one extra over. When rain interrupts play, results are usually decided with the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method, and each team normally needs to face at least five overs for a result to stand. Tournament playing conditions are published by the organisers and may add details such as tie-break rules.
Imagine a team scores 52 in the six-over powerplay, adds 61 in overs 7 to 15, and then scores 55 in the last five overs to finish on 168 for 6. The opponents must chase 169 at a required rate of 8.45 runs per over. If they reach 100 after 12 overs, they need 69 from 48 balls, a required rate of 8.63. Knowing these numbers helps you follow the tension.
A batter can be bowled, caught, leg before wicket, run out, stumped or hit wicket. A batter cannot be out leg before wicket from a no-ball and, on a free hit, can only be out in limited ways such as a run-out. Understanding dismissals helps make sense of every wicket on the broadcast.
A wide is a delivery too far from the batter to be hit, and it adds a run to the batting side's total and must be bowled again. A no-ball can be for overstepping the crease or for a high full toss, and it also adds a run and gives the batter a free hit. These extras can change a close finish.
How many overs does each team get? Twenty. How many overs can one bowler bowl? Four. What is the powerplay? The first six overs with fielding restrictions. What is a super over? A one-over-per-side tie-breaker. What is the minimum for a rain-affected result? Normally five overs for each team.
