Understand Why a Changed NEXT_PUBLIC Variable Did Not Update the Deployed UI

Example: an old public origin stays in links

Changing the hosting environment can leave browser-generated links using the value from the previous build. Rebuild and deploy through the supported pipeline when the value is compiled into client code. Verify the loaded release and assets before repeatedly toggling the same setting.

Confirm the operational contract

Document which settings need a rebuild and which are read at runtime. Check the public UI and server behavior independently. If a secret was exposed, rotate it through the appropriate process; removing its variable name from the next build does not invalidate a credential already delivered to visitors.

Should a runtime configuration screen expose environment secrets for debugging?

No. Use safe presence or configuration checks that do not reveal secret values. A helpful diagnostic can report that a required setting is missing without printing its contents. Keep browser-visible and server-only configuration intentionally separated throughout the build and deployment workflow.
